I want to get a job in IT, specifically in programming or database. What do you think is the best track? Options

I currently have a BA in History and have taken a couple of programming courses in college(java, vb, vb.net). I have been accepted to a Masters degree program in Software Development at a pretty good school. This Masters degree focuses on some technical aspects but is also an IT business related degree. My question is, should I attend the Masters degree program for the degree or should I take courses at the local tech school which will actually teach me more of the hands on technical aspects? My friend says the prestige of the Masters degree outweighs the benifits of the tech school. Any help would be appreciated.
